Joss - "A sequel's unlikely"

Interesting article. The important part...

"A sequel's unlikely," Whedon told Empire with a note of clear regret, "but it's amazing what permutations of something can happen." But if not a theatrical encore, that leaves... yes, you guessed it, a possible return to the smaller screen. "As long as I was able to service the characters with integrity and had enough money so that I wasn't hampered, then I would love to return Serenity to TV. I love that universe; it continues and those characters live on. There could be a series, there could be a miniseries, there could be all sorts of things. I'm not ruling anything out. I'll let it simmer for a while and see if anyone calls."

Oh, come on. Is anyone actually surprised? It was a miracle that the one film got made.

Serenity just about broke even when you add up the domestic and international markets. That not only means it didn't make any money except on DVD and tie-in sales, but it also means it didn't do badly enough to pull a Uwe Boll-style tax dodge.

Admittedly, the DVD sales should be signifigant. I can't imagine anyone owning the series and not owning the movie. But when Hollywood takes a risk on something, it has to do super-well to be considered a good risk.

It's only "sure things" that are allowed to tank and still get sequels.

No, it don't make no sense. S'fuckin' HOLLYWOOD!

I know this is blasphemy, but I think I'd be ok if it ended ... we needed closure from the series, and thank all the gods that float your boat we got it.

But I'm not sure I'd be enchanted with a "sane" River, and Wash was the Yin to Mal's Yang.

Of course, if there IS more, I'll watch it - but we'll always have the DVDs.

I'm happy from the POV that we can at least count on many more years of Joss's work. That being said, it would give me joy to see more Firefly/Serenity because the western/SF fusion grabs me.

<<But I'm not sure I'd be enchanted with a "sane" River, and Wash was the Yin to Mal's Yang.>>

On the other hand, Kaylee and Simon aren't exactly stone killers and help to balance Mal, Zoe and Jayne. And I think seeing the healed River discovering her abilities sounds pretty damn cool.

"And I think seeing the healed River discovering her abilities sounds pretty damn cool."

Actually, who's to say she's even healed? She's been able to free a repressed, deeply horrifying memory/feelings/information, but they *physically* modified and damaged her brain. They repeatedly shaved important parts of it off. If I recall correctly, Simon said that the removal of this chunk of brain is what caused/is causing her schizophrenia. Plus, she's probably still a "reader," and she may have more hidden memories left to uncover. So River could easily be interestingly nuts for a long time to come.

But I just can't imagine the show without Wash.
