Interesting article. The important part...
"A sequel's unlikely," Whedon told Empire with a note of clear regret, "but it's amazing what permutations of something can happen." But if not a theatrical encore, that leaves... yes, you guessed it, a possible return to the smaller screen. "As long as I was able to service the characters with integrity and had enough money so that I wasn't hampered, then I would love to return Serenity to TV. I love that universe; it continues and those characters live on. There could be a series, there could be a miniseries, there could be all sorts of things. I'm not ruling anything out. I'll let it simmer for a while and see if anyone calls."

Re: Joss - "A sequel's unlikely"
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 6:14 PMOh, come on. Is anyone actually surprised? It was a miracle that the one film got made.
Serenity just about broke even when you add up the domestic and international markets. That not only means it didn't make any money except on DVD and tie-in sales, but it also means it didn't do badly enough to pull a Uwe Boll-style tax dodge.
Admittedly, the DVD sales should be signifigant. I can't imagine anyone owning the series and not owning the movie. But when Hollywood takes a risk on something, it has to do super-well to be considered a good risk.
It's only "sure things" that are allowed to tank and still get sequels.
No, it don't make no sense. S'fuckin' HOLLYWOOD! -

Re: Joss - "A sequel's unlikely"
Sat, January 14, 2006 - 7:27 AMI know this is blasphemy, but I think I'd be ok if it ended ... we needed closure from the series, and thank all the gods that float your boat we got it.
But I'm not sure I'd be enchanted with a "sane" River, and Wash was the Yin to Mal's Yang.
Of course, if there IS more, I'll watch it - but we'll always have the DVDs. -

I'm happy from the POV that we can at least count on many more years of Joss's work. That being said, it would give me joy to see more Firefly/Serenity because the western/SF fusion grabs me.
<<But I'm not sure I'd be enchanted with a "sane" River, and Wash was the Yin to Mal's Yang.>>
On the other hand, Kaylee and Simon aren't exactly stone killers and help to balance Mal, Zoe and Jayne. And I think seeing the healed River discovering her abilities sounds pretty damn cool. -

Sun, January 15, 2006 - 10:04 PM"And I think seeing the healed River discovering her abilities sounds pretty damn cool."
Actually, who's to say she's even healed? She's been able to free a repressed, deeply horrifying memory/feelings/information, but they *physically* modified and damaged her brain. They repeatedly shaved important parts of it off. If I recall correctly, Simon said that the removal of this chunk of brain is what caused/is causing her schizophrenia. Plus, she's probably still a "reader," and she may have more hidden memories left to uncover. So River could easily be interestingly nuts for a long time to come.
But I just can't imagine the show without Wash. -

Re: Joss - "A sequel's unlikely"
Sun, January 15, 2006 - 10:11 PMDid Wash leave any DNA behind? can't we just clone him? -
-
Re: Joss - "A sequel's unlikely"
Sun, January 15, 2006 - 10:38 PMWell, unless Joss decides to do a silly Star-Trek-type instant cloning into adulthood with personality and memories intact, it'd be 30 years or so before he's up to snuff. I suppose Zoe could be his mum. :)

Re: Joss - "A sequel's unlikely"
Mon, January 16, 2006 - 12:25 PMHe could have been a clone to begin with. We get a different "wash", of sorts. That's the kind of twist that Joss is famous for... -

Re: Joss - "A sequel's unlikely"
Mon, January 16, 2006 - 1:10 PMOr if a new character is introduced as Zoe's new love interest, she could be haunted by Wash memories or have conversations with dead Wash, much as Wesley and the late Lyla did in Angel.
Alas, who's to say. I can't say I'm optimistic about a sequel (although it's more likely than a ressurection of the show). I guess I'm just waiting for the next Whedon project to become a rabid fan of and obsess over.

Re: Joss - "A sequel's unlikely"
Mon, January 16, 2006 - 10:10 PMGiven Joss's past, I doubt River getting better enough to fight one battle and fly through one atmo won't lead to consequences a'plenty.
And how does Zoe deal with her loss? And Mal and Inara with their whatever and Kaylee and Simon's post first-coitus?
Does Mal, after not only defeating the Operative, but managing to *change his mind* embolden him to reform a new Independents? I mean, we're hitting an election year--it would be sublime for Mal and perhaps some charismatic leader to take on the Republi...er, The Alliance.
*And what about Blue Sun Corporation*??? And the guys with the blue gloves???

Re: Joss - "A sequel's unlikely"
Mon, January 16, 2006 - 10:12 PMAnd since we've never learned what the deal is with Book's pre-holyman past, and considering the technology, he could totally come back as, say, a cloned intelliegnce copy of Book, a sort of Plan B double--except doing so could address the question of doubles, clones, human identity and have Ron Glass back in our lives.
Wash, I'm afarid, is history. -

Re: Joss - "A sequel's unlikely"
Mon, January 16, 2006 - 10:16 PMZoe, meanwhile, realizes there is no man good enough for her, and ends up hooking up with Saffron/Yolanda, who has been de-bitchi-insanitized.
They're happy for a few episodes, and THEN Rinse shows up.

Didn't you read the comic book?
You know, the three-issue limited series that was an immediate prequel to Serenity?
