This is just amazing to me. A little dust up between Nathan Fillion and a comic book store.

"Other side"? Seems like the same story to me! LOL!

The owner of the comic book store I worked at was a nice guy, but he'd gouge people, too. In an interveiw with he Comic Book Price Guide, he mentioned that a lot of the comics he sells are at 2 - 3 times Price Guide value (this was pre-Wizard). When asked why, he said "Because I can get it."

I'm guessing Nathan Fillon is not an experienced comics buyer. He may not know that the cover price is only a suggestion. If I walked into a grocery store and was told I'd have to pay $20 for a pound of cherries " 'cause they're really popular right now", I'd be pissed, too.

The Comic Book Guy on "The Simpsons" is a cliche, but cliches happen because so many of one type or another actually exist. The Live Journal guy was admittedly on the phone, so didn't hear the store owner lie to Fillon & say, "That's what we paid Dark Horse". C'mon - stand your ground, guy, get your asking price ... but don't stoop so low. You don't need to.

I like Fillon's idea of giving him the cover price if he'd SIGN a copy (or 2 or 5; hell, *I* would go for 5!), and then getting more money for the autographed one. Perhaps he didn't believe it was him, though; I shared a hot tub with the bass player from Guns 'n Roses at a convention and didn't believe it was him 'til I saw a video the next week.

I think a boycott's a bit strong; but then, he WAS just trying to do something nice for his mom!

I walked into the Waldenbooks in a nearby mall two days ago and they had at least six copies of the Serenity comic with the Mal cover. I guess I should've bought the damn things and put 'em on eBay.

When I got my copy, it was at this little hole-in-the-wall store on Union Rd. in Cheektowaga, NY, and they were discounting all new comics by 40%, so I got my copy for $1.80 instead of the cover price of $2.99.

What's with all the shortages? Aren't there any Firefly fans in WNY?

ROFL! Go back to Waldenbooks & get 'em!!!

I need to check there, myself; comic book stores here are in "gouge" mode, too. Although, I haven't checked any mom n' pop shops yet; I usually buy from the local Comic Book Guy, since he has all the small press & independant stuff.

Ugh, this is really stupid on the Captain's fault. Rude behavior is inexcusable, but nobody has a right to a retail price. If you're pissed off, don't shop there. Asking your fans to torment the store, which will cause innocent employees to suffer, is an embarassingly cocky use of clout.
I've never been to Canada, but do know a lot of comic book store owners, having published a few books. They are not getting rich gouging customers. They are barely getting by, often only getting by with that one sale on the secondary market where they take whatever price the market will bear. If that kind of flexibility is wrong, then you don't know any "right" comic book stores.

I know this is an old thread to dig up and comment on, but if anyone is interested in first-hand experience I have one.
I know there is gouging in the comic industry...actually any industry, but that store is pretty bad for it. I wanted to buy a plush Spike or Angel puppet from them and they were charging around $40 more than other stores in the city. Anyway, recently they've closed down to relocate to a smaller store and another comic store has opened in it's place. I've heard quite a few complaints over the past couple or years from people of different fandoms and it's not the first time boycott has been mentioned, just the most widely heard. I don't think it's right to torment people about it though. Time and a place.
